Teach Talk Webinar: Google in the Classroom

Last year Arizona State University switched to Canvas in order to leverage a cloud-based system that is available 24x7. In that same spirit of innovation, we explore using Google's cloud-based tools in our classes.

Our first Teach T@lk webinar of 2020 tried to go interstellar with a presentation titled “Gravitate Toward Google in the Classroom”. Lucy Wolski, Instructional Design Specialist for the School of Geographical Sciences and Urban Planning, shared an overview of G Suite for Education and Course kit, practical applications for workflow efficiency, and classroom engagement examples using Google products.

Cloud Based Tools

G Suite for Education is a suite of communication, production, and collaboration tools for learning anywhere, anytime, on any device. G Suite for Education is available to all students, faculty, and staff at https://drive.google.com!

Course kit is a set of tools that enhances Canvas LMS to help instructors collect, assess, and analyze coursework with the power of G Suite. With the course kit, you can integrate Google content through the rich text editor, adding external tools from the module page, enabling collaboration, and setting up google assignments.

Workflow Efficiency

By taking advantage of the synchronous nature of these cloud-based files, we can get so much more done in a day! Slides, for example, allow us to deliver content with real-time updates. No more uploading different versions each time there is a change. Building in Google Slides allows us to make mobile friendly lecture material that supports a variety of multimedia, including videos, gifs, images, diagrams, and hyperlinks. You can use this same synchronous and collaborative power to deliver syllabi and worksheets to your students.

Efficiency Pro-tips

  • Use Ctrl+Shift+S to open talk to text
  • Type docs.new into your browser to open a blank Doc
  • Note that Student Preview mode will not accurately work with Google integrations
  • Download the Google Drive mobile app to take pictures of a page and convert it to text

Classroom Engagement

Get creative with Google Maps, Docs, and Slides to make engaging in-class activities that can be adapted for online classes. Note that depending on the goal of the activity, the level of access will vary. For each of these examples below, the access setting is indicated in parentheses.

  • Interactive Map Activity
    • Demonstrate collaborative tools and create an online community visualization with a Google Map. (Anyone Can Edit)
  • Introvert Discussion
    • Post an article on Drive and initiate a quiet, real-time, discussion using comments. (Anyone Can Comment)
  • Group Glossary
    • Invite students to collaborate on a group glossary to go along with lecture materials. (Anyone Can Edit)
  • Learning Objectives Reflection
    • Use a Doc as a journal, and ask students to reflect on the module learning objectives (Anyone Can View)
